Why do two negative numbers multiplied together make a positive?

I'm a senior in high school but I never really stopped to think about it. Why do two negative numbers equal a positive number and how does this happen? Why do two negative numbers multiplied together make a positive?
it always goes up?Why do two negative numbers multiplied together make a positive?
I think it is because multiplying one number (positive or negative) by a negative number has to result in the opposite sign from that of the first number.
Its just the laws of mathematics.
