What do the first 3 numbers in your social security number mean?

I heard that it's related to the state you were born in. Is there a list somewhere? How can you find out what prefix belongs to what state? Thanks. What do the first 3 numbers in your social security number mean?
It used to represent the state of birth, but it no longer does. The first three (3) digits of a person's social security number are determined by the ZIP Code of the mailing address shown on the application for a social security number. (which may not be their home state bear in mind - for example I was born in Maryland but you wouldnt know that by this listing, which makes sense since I doubt they got around to submitting for my card from there). The state translation is as follows (or, was at least at some point as follows, I make no claims as to its accuracy):

Railroad Board**

729-733 Enumeration at Entry

NOTE: The same area, when shown more than once, means that certain numbers have been transferred from one State to another, or that an area has been divided for use among certain geographic locations.

Any number beginning with 000 will NEVER be a valid SSN.

The information in our records about an individual is confidential by law and cannot be disclosed except in certain very restricted cases permitted by regulations.

* = New areas allocated, but not yet issued

** 700-728 Issuance of these numbers to railroad employees was discontinued July 1, 1963.

all info (i.e. the numeric listing and rules) beyond my personal opening comments are copy and pasted from first link below, second link has additional information on this subject. I do not personally attest to the accuracy of this listing (as I know in my case there is something out of whack)

**edited for legibility and sensibiltyWhat do the first 3 numbers in your social security number mean?
The first three are the area number, they indicate the state where you first applied for the card.
I don't know much about the answer...but the last entry...DUJU...I do know that my first three number do not follow that state guideline...I have lived in Indiana all my life and my frist three numbers are not listed within the numbers you found.
It has something to do with where you were born.
you might check the social security website:

http://www.ssa.gov/
They signify the place you first applied for your Social Security Card.
they mean absolutely nothing
I would assume that it is State generated. Not sure why you would want to know unless you aren't sure where you were born.
it used to be that way---btu with so much identity theft and so on..i doubt thats the case any longer
They're a significant precursor to the next 2 digits
Its based on the state where you apply.

Example Vermont is 008/009
The first three number identifies the state of issuance of the SSN
it does have to do with the state. you can find them here at www.mrfa.org/ssn.htm.
