What year did VIN numbers come out for motorbikes?

I dont want to be messed around with buying an old beginners bike, if it's too ';old'; for a vin number...

So what year did they begin putting them on motorbikes? What year did VIN numbers come out for motorbikes?
It's not that simple.

VIN is an ISO standardization that was finalized in 1979~'80.

There's No Mandatory Compliance.

Only Voluntary participation.

Different countries use hybrid versions.

You can find bikes with actual VIN as early as '80~'81.

While other bikes didn't begin using them until early/mid '90's

Same Mfgr,Same Model in different world markets can be found with different I.D. numbering schemes.

Each bike must be judged on an individual basis.

It is,what it is.

There is NO specific date where ,

';Everything Before is a certain ID type,,,OLD style';,and

';Everything After is New Type VIN';

The ISO VIN STANDARD itself does have a ';birthday';.

But the Vehicles ,,,NO

For the last 10 yrs or so,,,almost everything, everywhere has adopted VIN Standard.

Most bikes started coming out with serial numbers back at the beginning of mass produced bikes about 100 years ago. They started calling them VIN numbers when bikes had to be licensed and the government got involved in what they are called.
