When I watch Sportscenter or something I see baseball highlights, and usually when someone grounds into a double play, they say 6 4 3 double play or something. What are the numbers for? What are all those double play numbers for?
They represent the position of the defense. Example: 6-4-3 double play means the ball was hit to the shortstop then thrown to the second baseman and then to the first baseman.
1-pitcher, 2-catcher, 3-first baseman, 4-second baseman, 5-third baseman,
6-shortstop, 7-left fielder, 8-center fielder, 9-right fielder. What are all those double play numbers for?
1 - Pitcher
2 - Catcher
3 - 1B
4 - 2B
5 - 3B
6 - SS
7 - LF
8 - CF
9 - RF
(Correct me if I am wrong on those)
But it is the formula for when they turn the double play.
6-4-3 would be a ground ball to the shortstop, throws to second (4) and throws to first (3)
5-4-3 Ground ball to 3B (5) throws to second (4), throws to first (3)
The numbers stand for the position the player was in when he or she became involved in the double play.
